WINSTON-SALEM, NC

Some times we are so busy finding interesting BIG THINGS (like this Coffee Pot) that we forget to check out other attractions. I feel we missed out in quaint, historical Winston-Salem. It was too early for anything to be open, but it looked like it was a good place to spend a couple of hours.

Charming, vintage gas station shaped like a shell. I think I’m pretty safe assuming it was a Shell station.

*WL WORLD’S LARGEST DRESSER

Oddly placed on a residential street, this piece is a big as a house! Billed as the WORLD’S LARGEST DRESSER. It apparently gets new socks on a regular basis – don’t know if they are the world’s largest, though.

*WL WORLD’S LARGEST DUNCAN PHYFE CHAIR

Nice lyre or harp back chair. Billed as the World’s Largest Chair, but let’s be real – I’ve seen bigger. I’m willing to let it be the world’s largest Duncan Phyfe Chair, though.

I don’t know if this is larger than life, because for the life of me I don’t know what it is! It’s affectionately referred to as Disco Chicken.

So these are along the lines of See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil. Right? These are in a parkette with several sculptures that (which?) incorporate the instruments of writing — typewriter keys, quill pen, stacks of books — as a tribute to a local newspaper publisher (According to Roadside America)

This is AMAZING. The silvery head is made up of 40 slices that rotate more or less randomly, and form a perfect head every hour or so. Called Metamorphosis, it is located in a technology park.

JANUARY 31, 2017

Columbus, GA to Pigeon Forge, TN

Day 14- Part 2

The first part of the drive through the Smoky Mountains is pretty ratty – and without the added bonus of BIG THINGS to offset that impression. To be honest, I hadn’t realized we would be driving through a portion of North Carolina, and that we would be driving past Cherokee, where there is – you guessed it – a big Indian. Désolés! What a missed opportunity!

We did find this eagle in Franklin, North Carolina. It’s part of the war memorial, though I don’t really think it has the gravitas that is required

Also in Franklin, we came across this vulture. Is this REALLY the symbol your paving company wants?

And that was it for North Carolina.

Once we reached the Tennessee border, the terrain and the scenery became much more interesting. I recommend this drive to anyone – it was beautiful.

We finally reached Tennessee, and like every other day, we were starting to lose the light.

GATLINBURG, TN

Gatlinburg is a pretty town, but definitely there to collect your tourist dollars. The main advantage is you can cover most of the town on foot. We had planned on stopping to sample some moonshine, but hunger was getting the better of us, and after a couple of quick pictures, we hopped back in the car to head for Pigeon Forge

20170131_172500

This giant skillet makes a pretty appealing sign.

20170131_172914

Even the trash containers are themed up! This was just the first of SO MANY adventure golf locations in this part of Tennessee.

PIGEON FORGE, TN

Even though we are ravenous, we couldn’t pass by these huge oars or the happy bear.

I’m looking for a fish dinner, but it looks like I’m about to be the dinner here!

Nice Gator!

Location: Live Alligators Souvenir Store, 3370 Parkway, Pigeon Forge

Finally! We stopped at Huck Finn’s for dinner principally because of the big catfish outside. Who says advertising doesn’t pay!

20170131_175120

Mmm, mmm, mmm! All you can eat catfish, hush puppies, and fried chicken. There must be a little bit of hillbilly in all of us! I ate all my catfish, and all of my wife’s (she didn’t care for it, but I was happy to make it disappear). She had fried chicken, and said it was the best she’s had – moist and crispy, but not greasy. The cole slaw is home made. The hush puppies were fabulous – we did order extra of them. I went away happy that we had waited to eat here, no matter how hungry we were. Staff was charming, decor was pleasantly kitschy. It’s too bad it isn’t licensed – a beer would have been nice with all that fried food -would have rounded out the heart attack meal nicely! I highly recommend Huck Finn’s..

Just when you think you couldn’t eat another bite – there’s a Twistee Treat! Good thing it was closed!

I’ll bet I’ll be seeing this guy in the nightmares I’m liable to have tonight from overeating!

Of course there are the ubiquitous chickens running around Pigeon Forge, but at least these ones have the decency to dress up!

What a great display! These giant cowboy boots are on turntables, and every few minutes they rotate inside the store, to show a different display in the window. It’s magic!

20170131_192308  20170131_19233720170131_192355  20170131_192422

I was trying on cowboy hats (which didn’t look bad on me!) but my wife said I would never wear it once I left Pigeon Forge, so I opted for a dark brown waxed-leather-look fedora, which I’m sure you will see in upcoming blog posts.

And to continue with the oversized theme, take a gander at these horns – 32 feet from tip to tip! That’s a lot of burger!

This is certainly a big boot, but it just doesn’t have the same class as the ones above ( how quickly we become spoiled!)

This is as close as I dared get to those pincers! That’s a mighty big crab!

It’s the Hollywood version of Mount Rushmore! I’ll bet more Americans can identify these people, than the presidents on the mountain!

20170131_181813

(let’s see… Thomas Jefferson, some lady I don’t recognize, maybe Tom Sellick by the mustache, and Abe Lincoln’s smiling twin brother Gabe? Just kidding!)

The Hollywood Museum is lit up like day time- no wonder King Kong is so cranky – how can you sleep with all this light!
